BRANCH PRECAUTIONS

We are taking special measures to protect our members and our employees. If you have an appointment at one of our branches, please consider the following:

Access: We will ask members to answer a series of public health questions in order to have access to the branch. If you are feeling sick, have been in contact with anyone sick, or have traveled within Canada or out of the country in the preceding 14 days, you will not be permitted to enter our branches. We ask that you contact us by phone or email to assist you or to make an appointment.

Social distancing: We ask everyone to maintain a distance of at least two metres (just over 6 feet) from each other if you have an appointment at a branch.

Hand hygiene: We will ask you to use the hand sanitizer available at our branch entrances. We will avoid greeting members with handshakes at this time. All locations are receiving additional cleaning and disinfecting.

As we navigate the ever-changing COVID-19 landscape, it is vital that we are able to connect with you to provide important information and updates. Please ensure that we have current information about you, including your email, cell phone number and mailing address. March 25, 2020

The COVID-19 situation continues to evolve every day, and it is impacting Canadians at every level. At Kawartha Credit Union, our commitment to you remains the same and we will be here to assist you during these challenging times.

We are taking important steps to safeguard everyone – our members, our employees and the communities we serve.

  • Some branches may temporarily close to protect our members and our employees.
  • All open branches will have limited hours – Monday to Friday: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; the same hours apply to branches that are open on Saturday. We are closed on Sundays. We may be adjusting branch hours as we navigate the pandemic, so please watch our website, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for updates.
  • Extra safety precautions are in place at our branches, such as adjusting staff levels, extra cleaning and disinfecting, and social distancing to reduce possible exposure. We appeal to our members to respect these precautions, and visit branches only when absolutely necessary. Our branch staff are available by phone, and our ATMs are open for your cash needs. Our Contact Centre (1-855-670-0510) is also available to assist you from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays. We encourage you to sign up for online, telephone and/or mobile banking so that you can do all of your banking from the comfort of your own home.
  • Most important, if you are ill or have any cold or flu-like symptoms, have been exposed to COVID-19 or have been asked to self-isolate, we ask that you not come in. This is critically important for the protection of our employees, other members and your community.
We’re here to help if you are experiencing financial challenges. We have simple, easy-to-arrange lending solutions to assist you if you need a helping hand. Reach out to your local branch or our Contact Centre and we’ll find a solution that’s right for you.

In addition to providing the best service possible during these difficult days, we can also offer you PEACE OF MIND.

As a member, you can have peace of mind knowing that Kawartha Credit Union is in a strong financial position. We are well capitalized which acts as a buffer in times of stress. Our liquidity is also strong as measured by internationally recognized standards. We have access to liquidity as required through Government programs and borrowing facilities, providing us with sufficient resources to meet member needs. Our capital ratio at December 31, 2019 was 13.82%, which is well above both our internal policy limit and the lower regulatory limit requirement. Members should also take comfort in the fact that non-registered insurable deposits held at an Ontario credit union in Canadian funds have a maximum coverage amount of $250,000, while deposits in registered accounts have unlimited coverage. The Financial Services Regulatory Authority website can provide more detail on this coverage (https://www.fsrao.ca/consumers).

As we have no direct exposure to Equity market volatility, there is little impact to us. Our revenue will be impacted by lower interest rates which we are able to mitigate to some extent. The Prime lending rate has gone back down to roughly the same level as 2010 through 2017, during which time Kawartha remained profitable and growing.

Kawartha Credit Union’s year-end financial statements for 2019 are now available on our website (https://www.kawarthacu.com/AboutUs/What’s New/Annual Reports/) and will provide more details about our financial position to give you peace of mind that your money is safe with us. We have been profitable for the past 27 consecutive years and we fully expect that trend to continue despite the current challenges.

Although these times are challenging for everyone around the world, Kawartha Credit Union is committed to doing what’s right for our members and our employees. And we will get through this…one day at a time.

Thank you for your patience and your trust.

March 16, 2020

These past few weeks have been unprecedented in terms of increasing outbreaks of COVID-19 and market volatility. We want our members to know that we take these developments very seriously, and we are implementing actions to help you navigate through them and to protect the well-being of members and employees. Our team is here to help when you need us.

Maintaining a high level of banking access and support
We have business continuity plans in place to ensure that we can meet your needs, especially during times of disruption such as this. This includes having some members of our team working at alternate office locations or from their home to ensure continuity of service.

If there is an outbreak or possible exposure in one of our branches or in our branch communities, we will take necessary precautions. We will follow the advice of local public health officials which could result in the closing of affected branches.

We encourage our members to think about their day-to-day banking needs in the event of branch closures. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  • Make deposits at our ATMs.
  • Our Contact Centre is available to assist members with a variety of banking needs.
  • Call 1-855-670-0510
  • Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Pay bills, transfer funds, and check balances using online banking, telephone banking or through our Contact Centre. Sign up for these services today by calling our Contact Centre.

Providing expert advice
We understand that in times of uncertainty, access to advice and expertise is essential. With recent volatility in equity markets and changes in interest rates, our team is ready to review your financial plans with you. Many of our members have asked what they should do to protect themselves in the current market. As a general rule, the answer is that you should stick to the plan you’ve put in place. The reason you have a financial plan is for times like this – to help put short term market fluctuations in the context of your long-term ambitions.

Protecting our members and our employees
Kawartha’s employees take care of you, and we are committed to taking care of them. We are providing our employees with the most current information and guidelines from government and health authorities to support their well-being. Our benefits and sick leave policy ensure that employees can take time off in the event of illness. We’re working together to ensure your needs are met. In an effort to reduce exposure, we ask members who have symptoms of illness to not attend our branches out of consideration for other members and our employees. We have instituted enhanced cleaning protocols for public spaces such as our branches and offices.

If COVID-19 is impacting you please, let us know
If you are directly impacted by COVID-19 and are facing financial challenges as a result, we are here to help. Call your local branch and we will find a solution to meet your needs. You'll have a lot on your mind, and we want to be there for you.

Thank you for trusting us with your business, and rest assured you that we are here to help. The Canadian credit union system and Kawartha specifically are strong, well capitalized and ready to support our members through this period.

As you have seen in the news, the COVID-19 developments are constantly evolving. We will communicate updates as new information becomes available.

Please check our website for timely updates, or follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. We will communicate with our members regularly.
