Spreading Holiday Cheer in Our Communities

branch cheque presentation

At Kawartha, giving back isn’t just something we do – it’s who we are. As a member-owned cooperative, we put the needs and well-being of our communities first. Through our Community Involvement Program, we’ve proudly contributed more than $4 million to charitable and non-profit organizations across Central and Eastern Ontario – and that’s just the beginning.

From volunteering at many local community organizations such as food banks, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Habitat for Humanity, to hosting fundraisers like book sales, barbecues and raffles, our team is always looking for ways to make a difference. Caring for others is one of our core values, and our employees live and breathe that value every day – through their interactions with members and through their commitment to giving back.

This holiday season, we wanted to recognize that spirit of generosity by inviting our staff to help direct our corporate holiday donations. Each branch selected an organization in their community to receive a $1,000 donation from us, while our office support teams directed $11,000 in donations to organizations in Peterborough. In total, we gave back $35,000 – and donated almost 5,000 personal care, household and non-perishable food items to local food banks, too.

Branch Donations

Here are the organizations chosen by each of our branch teams to receive a $1,000 donation from Kawartha:

  • Bracebridge – Manna Food Bank, which they also supported with a food drive. Many of our members serve on the Board of this local food bank.
  • Huntsville – Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, which provides forever homes for native species that are unable to survive in the wild due to human interference.

  • Parry Sound – The Drop, which provides a safe and inclusive place for youth to get a meal or do crafts.

  • South River – The Women’s Own Resource Centre, a member organization that supports women and families with employment preparedness and overall support.

  • Chemong – Community Care Peterborough, which provides support programs and services for seniors as well as adults living with disabilities. They also ran a book sale fundraiser for them ahead of the holidays.

  • Keene – Salvation Army, supporting their Christmas Basket Program providing presents and Christmas dinner to families in need.

  • Kinmount – Kinmount & Area Food Bank, helping those in need across the Kawartha Lakes, Minden Hills and Trent Lakes area. They also set up a collection box in branch to raise funds for the food bank.

  • Lindsay – BGC Kawarthas, supporting the holiday hamper program for families in need during the holiday season.

  • Kingston Downtown – Kingston Youth Shelter, which provides housing support to homeless youth in Kingston.

And finally, our Contact Centre team chose A Place Called Home, an emergency shelter providing support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the City of Kawartha Lakes and County of Haliburton.

Supporting Local Causes in Peterborough

Peterborough is where our story began in 1952, when our credit union – then known as Cangeco Credit Union – was founded by local employees of Canadian General Electric. Today, while we’ve expanded across Central and Eastern Ontario – and now into Southwestern Ontario through our recent merger with Libro Credit Union – Peterborough remains the heart of Kawartha Financial Services. Nearly one-third of our Kawartha members and many of our employees call this community home.

To celebrate that connection, we donated $11,000 to the following local charities chosen by our office support staff at our Hunter Street regional office. Each donation reflected a cause close to their hearts this holiday season.

Holiday Food Drive Challenge

Last year’s branch-wide food drive was a success – but in December 2025, we took it up a notch with our first-ever Kawartha Holiday Food Drive Challenge! Branches and office teams participated in a friendly competition to collect the most personal care, household, and non-perishable food items for local families in need.

The results? Nearly 5,000 items collected and delivered to food banks across our communities before the holidays.

Thank you to our members and staff for your generosity and for helping us spread holiday cheer across the communities we serve. Together, we’re making a real difference.
